Honeycomb Board POS Display: Standees and FSDUs That Last a Campaign

Corrugated sags before the promotion ends, foam board bows under the lights and PVC costs a fortune to ship and dispose. Here is how print shops build a POS display that stays square until the campaign is over.

A honeycomb board POS display is a point-of-sale unit, floor standee or free-standing display unit (FSDU) built from die-cut paper honeycomb sheets with laminated full-colour graphics. It is stiffer than corrugated at the same footprint, so trays hold heavier product without sagging; it stays flat under store lighting where foam board bows; and at the end of the campaign the whole unit goes into ordinary paper recycling. Print shops and display makers use it for FMCG launches, pharmacy counters, electronics retail and supermarket aisle ends.

This article covers how the units are constructed, why honeycomb has become the substrate of choice over corrugated, foam board and PVC or metal, how a print shop specifies thickness and finish, what it does to the cost of a campaign, and where it is the wrong material. Everything here applies to standard kraft honeycomb board of the kind phb manufactures in Balakong, Selangor.

How a honeycomb board POS display is built

Most units are a kit of flat die-cut parts: a base, two side panels, a header card and one or more shelf trays. Slots and tabs are cut into the honeycomb so the parts push together in the aisle without glue or tools, and a single merchandiser can assemble a floor standee on the spot. The graphics are printed on paper or synthetic sheet and laminated to the kraft face before die-cutting, so the artwork wraps the edges cleanly and the white base gives full-colour print its punch. Header cards and shelf-edge strips are usually the same laminated build in a thinner sheet.

Because honeycomb routes and knife-cuts as cleanly as it die-cuts, contour-cut character standees, arched headers and product-shaped cut-outs are straightforward. Scored fold lines make tent cards and folding counter units, and tape hinges join multi-panel backdrops for aisle-end displays.

Why honeycomb beats corrugated, foam board and PVC for a campaign

Against corrugated: honeycomb is much stiffer for its weight, so a shelf tray holds heavier product, bottles and jars, without the mid-campaign sag that makes a corrugated FSDU look tired before the promotion is over. The unit stays square from install to takedown. Against foam board: honeycomb does not bow under the heat of retail lighting, and it goes into paper recycling rather than landfill. Against PVC and metal: honeycomb costs less per unit, ships light to many stores at once, needs no tooling or welding, and is disposed of by the retailer as paper rather than as bulky waste that has to be collected and stored.

The trade-off should be stated plainly: honeycomb costs more per sheet than corrugated or foam board. The saving comes on the campaign, not the sheet, and the next section shows where.

How a print shop specifies it, and what it does to campaign cost

Thickness: 10–16mm sheet runs through most flatbed presses and cutters and suits header cards, side panels and shelf-edge graphics. 20–30mm is used for structural parts, the base and the shelf trays that carry product weight. Finish: for white, full-colour surfaces, laminate a printed sheet onto the kraft face; direct UV printing onto the kraft suits single-colour, typographic or natural-look designs where the brown shows through. Sheets are available from 10mm to 50mm and up to 2.4m x 1.2m, so a full-height standee comes from one sheet with no join.

On cost, be honest with the client. The board costs more than corrugated and foam board and less than PVC or metal. The saving arrives in four places: fewer replacement units mid-campaign because nothing sags or bows; lighter delivery when the same unit goes to many stores; one-person assembly in the aisle with no tools; and paper recycling at takedown, which retailers with ESG reporting increasingly write into their supplier requirements. As an illustrative comparison, a print shop running a season-long promotion across a chain would normally budget a round of corrugated replacements; with honeycomb that round is usually not needed.

Where honeycomb is the wrong choice for POS

Do not put uncoated honeycomb in chilled cabinets, wet-produce sections or anywhere the unit will be wet-cleaned; standard board is not made for wet duty, and a coated or laminated build or a plastic base is needed there. Very heavy product, cases of drinks or multipacks of detergent, wants a steel frame or plastic base with honeycomb used for the graphics and light trays only. And for photographic fine detail, print on the laminated sheet rather than directly on kraft, because the natural brown face softens fine tints and thin lines.

Frequently asked questions

Is honeycomb board strong enough for a floor standee holding product?

Yes for most retail product. Use 20–30mm honeycomb for the base and shelf trays and 10–16mm for the header and side panels, and the unit will carry bottles, jars, boxed goods and pharmacy lines without sagging. For very heavy product such as cases of drinks or multipack detergent, pair honeycomb graphics with a steel frame or plastic base.

Is honeycomb board better than corrugated for POS displays?

For any campaign longer than a few weeks, yes. Honeycomb is much stiffer for its weight, so trays do not sag and the unit stays square to the end. It costs more per sheet than corrugated, but it usually avoids the mid-campaign replacement round and delivers a flatter, brighter laminated graphic. Both materials recycle as paper.
